Gearhead, Journalist, Kickballer, Writer, Cowboy,
but not necessarily in that order.
I'm a reporter and editor in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with more than 20 years of experience on the front lines of journalism in New Mexico.
Find some of my work by using the link on the top of the page, or connect with me on Twitter: @abqdanmayfied, or on Facebook for my latest news. I've managed teams of reporters as an editor and manager at two metro daily papers, ran the city's premiere lifestyle magazine and now I'm writing and reporting about innovation and entrepreneurship.
I didn't intend to do this for a living, but I can't imagine myself doing anything else. When I started college I was a math major. At a tech school. I loved proof theory, combinatorics and calculus. But when it came to differential equations, I hung it up and dove into writing and photography at the University of New Mexico, where I learned how to channel my curiosity into news.
Since then, I've been able to learn from some of the best at the Pulitzer Prize winning Albuquerque Tribune, teach others as a writer and editor at the state's largest daily, the Albuquerque Journal, run the state's largest monthly magazine and today I'm exploring the nexus of innovation and business in the startup world.
My career has taken me to places I never would have imagined, and I'm still on the journey. I explored the startup, retail, and tech world at the Tribune. I wrote about Ozzy, Kanye, and some of the world's finest visual artists at the Journal, and explored Albuquerque's cultural life as the editor in chief of Albuquerque The Magazine.
Though every publication I've worked at has had Albuquerque in the title, I'm constantly amazed at the resilience, creativity and innovation in Albuquerque and every day I write a little bit more, and a little bit more, and a little bit more.....
